“NEPTŪNAS“ DEFEATED THE TEAM OF GDYNIA “ASSECO“ IN ALYTUS

“Neptūnas“ basketball players coached by Dainius Adomaitis won against the team from Gdynia, “Asseco“ (Poland) with the final score of 69:68 (18:16, 13:12, 19:20, 19:20).

“Neptūnas“ players were ahead by a few points for the majority of the game; however, near the end of the game the Polish team managed to outscore them by 68:67. Then, Mindaugas Girdžiūnas took initiative and provoked a foul. The player from “Neptūnas“ hit both free shots in cold blood and helped his team to snatch the victory. By the way, the team of Gdynia, “Asseco” still had time for the last attack, but the players from Klaipėda were able to defend and did not give their opponents another chance.

“Neptūnas“ was led to victory by Martynas Mažeika, scoring 16 points (6 rebounds), Arvydas Šikšnius - 14, Gilvydas Biruta - 9 (rebounds), Jerai Grant, competing after his recovery scored 8, Donatas Zavackas - 7 (11 rebounds), Mindaugas Girdžiūnas - 6, Arnas Butkevičius - 4, Daniel Eveng, appearing on the basketball court after the injury scored 3, Simas Galdikas - 2 pts.

Among the ranks of the Polish team, 23 points were scored by Anthody Hickey, 14 - Filip Matczak, 7 - Przemyslaw Frasunklewic.

“Neptūnas“ clearly won the fight for rebounds - 46:31.

In the international tournament a total of 6 teams, divided into two sub-groups, are competing for the Cup of the Mayors of Alytus city and district. “Dzūkija“ from Alytus is also competing in the same group as “Neptūnas“. “Dzūkija“ surrendered to the Gdynia team “Asseco” on Saturday with a result of 75:86 (18:20, 9:20, 23:22, and 25:24).

The team “Neptūnas“ are facing the players from Alytus on Monday at 19:30.

The “Lietuvos rytas”of Vilnius, “Lietkabelis” of Panevėžys, and Riga “VEF” (Latvia) teams are competing in another sub-group.

During the group stage the teams will play against each other one game. On the last day of the tournament (September 15th, Tuesday), the 1st place winners of the sub-groups will compete in the Final; 2nd place - in the Semifinal; and 3rd place winners will compete for the last 5th place.
